FTW Industry

Robert Vaughn is a true success story. Raised on the streets of California with no formal education, he and one-time partner Michael Cassel teamed up to create the successful Von Dutch clothing line. Vaughn, then a wild young professional surfer, met Cassel through the surf industry. Sharing a passion for surfing and both from the streets, it was only a matter of time before they conceived the idea of a clothing line that appealed to the edgier side of fashion. Having now sold Von Dutch, Vaughn has been focused on a new clothing line – FTW. Familiar with the FTW acronym popular in biker and tattoo circles for years, Vaughn has always felt it held a deeper message than just “Fuck the World.” To him, FTW stands for much more than what’s on the surface. “I was raised with a lot of bad things happening around me. Drugs, guns, people getting killed – those things surrounded me every day. But just because I may have grown up with that or I may look a certain way doesn’t mean that’s who I am.” Vaughn has much respect for the streets and realizes how appealing a gangster lifestyle can be to kids, creating FTW for him is a statement that says “you can have a hard edge look and you can be extreme, but you don’t have to live the lifestyle”. FTW for Vaughn is more about saying the world can be full of a lot of superficiality, but you can be whoever you want to be, no matter what you look like or where you come from. “FTW is my way to capture the audience that I personally connect to and give them a message that says just because I look rough, doesn’t mean I am.”
